One of the things we haven’t talked about much is our entry into the European Mead Makers Association (EMMA) a couple of months ago. The whole reason we exist as a company, is because the Meadmeister could not find mead made from just honey. We often speak about the issue with mead not being legally defined in the UK and how this results in producers making meads that are made by using other fermentables – sugar, white wine, base alcohol etc.
A few years ago, a number of UK producers, including ourselves, tried to establish a UK Mead Makers Association. It was not successful as we could not get agreement for the minimum percentage of honey required for a product to be considered a mead. The smaller producers wanted 100% with 80% for ‘Melomels’ (Fruited Meads) but the largest company present would not accept anything over 51% honey.
We have been following the work of EMMA for a few years and like what we see. Gordon had a meeting and several conversations with them at the 2025 Mead Madness Cup and we signed up for membership in March 2025. We look forward to working with EMMA and getting involved with their important work – including how they are re-shaping what mead is, including a certification programme – more on that to follow!
